You owe a debt to a credit card company. You fall behind, and the credit card company sells the debt to some other company.
Happens all the time, don’t look so shocked.

They’d been divorced for years when she discovered he’d been messing with her credit score.
She called in tears, sobbing about how her ex-husband was supposed to have removed her name from the joint credit card as part of the divorce decree. He hadn’t done so, fell behind on the payments to the creditor, and now her credit score looked like swiss cheese.

He knew he wasn’t going to be able to wipe out his student loans in bankruptcy, so he had a better idea. Or did he?
Most people with student loan debt know they can’t wipe out their student loan debts in bankruptcy without jumping through hoops like a circus animal.

Thinking of cosigning a loan? What could possibly go wrong?
When you cosign for someone else, you are considered to be equally responsible for repayment. If the other person doesn’t pay then you’re going to need to do so.

Sometimes you need to change your thinking to change the outcome.
There’s a saying in Alcoholics Anonymous that goes, “Your best thinking got you here.” In the context of recovery from addiction, the phrase means that your best ideas about a happy life nearly you killed.
